South Florida’s Secret Beach
We have a secret here in South Florida — a beautiful beach that’s virtually never crowded. Where you can listen to the sounds of the sea, wind and gulls instead of listening to others talk or blast their music.
This gem of a beach is MacArthur Beach State Park, and it’s located in North Palm Beach, on the Atlantic Ocean.
I’ve been to MacArthur Beach several times, and never have I seen the beach crowded — in fact, there were less than a dozen people each time, on the 2 miles of beach. Plenty of room to stretch out and relax!
It’s not a wide beach (then again, few beaches in south Florida are), but it is plenty big — you aren’t squeezed between the dunes and the high-tide mark.
I guess one reason that MacArthur Beach isn’t so widely visited is because you have a 600-foot boardwalk to cross in order to get to the beach. It stretches over Lake Worth Cove, and if you like to carry lots of beach goodies (umbrellas, coolers, chairs, etc.) then the walk is a chore.
However, if it’s just you and a backpack (and maybe a small beach chair), you can catch the free tram that runs back and forth between the parking area and the dunes.
While you’re at MacArthur Beach State Park, you can rent a kayak and explore Lake Worth Cove. Walk the dune trails. Check out the Visitor Center.
So next time you’re in South Florida and you’re hankering for a quiet Florida beach, check out MacArthur Beach State Park.
