Disney Florida Resident Weekday Pass

The Disney Florida Resident Weekday Pass is a new promotion Disney World has just put out for we who live in the Sunshine state.  What’s the deal for us residents?

Here’s the scoop for the savings it offers (which are pretty substantial, if you can take advantage of it).

Disney Florida Resident Weekday Pass Details

OK, you know that Florida residents currently get a discount for admission to the theme parks.  For a single day it’s not a lot of a discount, but it gets better the more days you buy.  (And right now, a 1-day theme park pass is around $70.)

But with this new promotion, you can get an unlimited pass to the parks for $169 (per person).

Here’s the fine print.  The pass is only good Monday through Friday, and it has black-out dates.  But it is good for one year from purchase!

The Finer Print of the Offer

Here they are, the black-out dates:

  • All Saturdays and Sundays
  • December 19, 2009–January 1, 2010
  • March 27–April 9, 2010
  • June 12–August 19, 2010 (i.e., the entire summer.  Too hot anyway!)
  • December 18, 2010–January 1, 2011.

Proof of Florida residency required. Excludes certain activities/events separately priced. Pass is nontransferable and valid for one year from date of issuance.

I will say, though, if you live close enough to Orlando to visit Disney often, this is a great deal.  If I lived closer to Orlando, I’d certainly take advantage of it.

So that’s the scoop on the new Disney Florida Resident Weekday Pass.  Have fun at Walt Disney World!

More Lion Country Safari, Florida Photos — Rhinos

Lion Country Safari RhinoLion Country Safari in South Florida doesn’t have just lions, or zebras. There are rhinos on the safari drive, too. We got lucky, in that the rhinos decided to graze pretty close to the side of the road as we were driving by.

(By the way, you can click on the photos to see a larger image.)

Naturally, after my post about the zebras, I decided to hunt for ways that the rhino homeland is like South Florida. Do these big beasts find it sufficiently homey here? Or are they in a foreign environment where they aren’t comfortable? So it’s off to the internet to search!

Lion Country Safari Rhino CloseupAs usual, Wikipedia gave me the most information. Based on the info, I’m guessing that the rhinos at Lion Country Safari are white rhinos (but they don’t exactly look white, do they?). First, they are the most plentiful species and second…the photo on this page most closely resembles the white rhino on Wikipedia.

So what about comparing South Florida to where these animals really come from? Savannas and scrubland seem to be the favored habitats of the white, and as I’ve mentioned before, here in South Florida (at least in Palm Beach County) we do have the scrub.

I’m guessing that we are more humid, not to mention wetter, than Africa where the white rhino calls home. Winters here are probably pretty nice for these creatures, though — less humid and milder temperatures, for the most part.

So there you are — the white rhinoceros, courtesy of Lion Country Safari!

Boo! Haunted Florida Places

Yes, there are supposedly places in Florida that are haunted — and not just the Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney World!

The two most famous “spirited” places in Florida are St. Augustine and Key West.  Both have ghost tours (in the form of walking tours) and St. Augustine goes a bit further in that regard.

For example, in St. Augustine you can also take a boat tour or ride in style in a limo…which used to be a hearse!  (Quite inventive, I’d say.)

Ghosts are big business in both these Florida vacation spots, but are they real?  Certainly many people have reported eerie feelings on these tours.  But are they spirits…or an active imagination, triggered by stories and legends told in the dark of the night?
